Tips for Sound Engineers - Noise Gates

Another effective way to help 'clean up' your live sound mix, is to use noise gates to isolate just the instrument you are mic'ing, which will help to prevent spill from surrounding instruments and noise entering into your mix.

Most current digital audio consoles have noise gates on-board every input channel.  As an example for a drum, you can use a gate to trigger the channel to be on and pass audio only when the drum is being hit - thus not having the microphone pickup the surrounding noise the rest of the time.

As you will see & hear in the video, this can make a huge difference to the quality and clarity of your mix.
